The factors you can’t control
Your age. Young drivers are statistically more likely to have an accident and make a claim, and therefore have to pay higher insurance premiums.
Your driving record. If you’ve got points on your licence such as a speeding offence, or a driving conviction you’ll have to pay a higher premium as car insurers will consider you to be more of a ‘high-risk’ driver.
Your previous claims. Car insurers reward drivers who don’t make claims on their car insurance with a no-claims discount, which means the less you claim, the less you potentially pay for your car insurance.
The factors you can control
Your excess. In general, paying a higher excess — the amount you’d have to pay upfront if you made a claim — will mean paying a lower premium. However, you need to make sure that you’re able to afford to pay the excess if you do need to make a claim.
Your security. Installing security devices such as a high-tech immobiliser will help cut the cost of your insurance premium.
Your level of cover. The level of cover you choose will affect the price you pay – third party is usually the cheapest, while comprehensive is often the most expensive, though this isn’t always the case.
